  1. Alan, just read you blog with great interest. I too joined the Royal Navy in July 1971 and spent 6 weeks at HMS Raleigh, reading your blog brought back great memories to me. I also joined HMS Pembroke for my trade training as Steward and later was posted to HMS Cochrane in Rosyth. I left the Navy before completing my first year, a decision I regret to this day. I can remember the day in July 71 when my dear Mother put me on the train at Newcastle Central Station for the 12 hour journey to Plymouth. My email address is if you would like to keep exchange tales of Raleigh. Best Wishes JW

    • Hey hi John and thanks for your memories. It’s a small world isn’t it? You’ve probably realised I’m a Geordie too if you’ve read any of the earlier pages although at the moment I’m living in Nottinghamshire.
I think Raleigh was a make-or-break experience and not my favourite recollection; things did get easier after training and eventually evolved into very enjoyable.
Good to here from you John; my direct email is: if you would like to stay in touch. Take care. Alan
