On the right of this page is my Twitter feed and I’ve just retweeted an article which made me wonder if I’m missing something. The parish council of a village in India has banned the use of mobile phones by girls and banned them from singing and dancing at weddings. They say the reason for this is to protect their girls from becoming spoiled which I think loosely translates as meaning they are not gang raped by the men of the village. Is it only me who sees a problem with this.
As someone who has a deep respect for people of all races, creeds and cultures I’m not one who would challenge the way others live their lives lightly; and I also accept that having been raised in a western society for me to jump in and judge wouldn’t be right. But I can’t help feeling uncomfortable with this and wondered ‘Is it me?’.
No, it’s them.
