I was thinking today about pseudonyms people use rather than their own names when signing their creative works and wondered why we all did that. I think it might be something to do with keeping the private self separate from the public one.
My own pseudonym Spailpinfanac is a name I picked up in Ireland and is the name of the oldest public house in Cork where I had the privilege of enjoying a drink to the dulcet sounds of some wonderful Irish musicians. Apart from falling in love with the name I also fell in love with the meaning ‘The Wandering Labourer’ which is very much how I see myself, as those who read my biography will know. Perhaps, though, we don’t want to be too anonymous as artists and maybe there’s a hint of our real self behind the mask? Alan x
