Day out at the donkey sanctuary

In the UK donkeys are used as working animals and sadly many (though not all) are abused by their owners. Around the country there are many donkey sanctuaries where kind hearted people take in the animals and give them a safe and dignified retirement; today we visited one near Loughborough, Leicestershire and though there was a bitter wind it was breath-taking to see the dedication of the staff and the wonderful lives the donkeys had.

For decades children (including me) have loved the donkey rides and I’ve always been a firm believer that children who have contact with animals grow up to be kinder caring adults. Even today at the sanctuary children were having rides around the paddock and in awe of these beautiful creatures. Long may we all always treat our donkeys kindly.
