Stonehaugh Totem Poles.

Chatted today with a reader friend from Stonehaugh, in Northumberland, which is the first village I lived in following my birth at Dilston Hall in Corbridge. The village was created for forestry workers in the early 1950s and my dad worked as one after leaving the army.

One of the defining features of the village are the Totem poles which represent various characteristics of the area. These little impromptu sketches were inspired by the conversation I had today, which I will develop into a painting although I will research further to get the details correct.

  1. Thank you for the kind comment! And wow those new developments sound fabulous. I love the idea that the children had agency to be actively involved in designing the new totems. Now retired, I have bought an old VW T4 campervan and so will certainly have a ride up in summer to check it all out a d map out a painting for my collection.

  2. The sketchers look great. The totem poles, x3, are still here, but they needed to be replaced a few years ago.. the designs were drawn by children from a local school, called and erected… in addition to the area, we have the stargazing pavilion, the activity centre, a platform for telescopes and myself and Liam cleared the small wooded area adjacent during the covid lock down. This gives a short walk, somewhere to sit, and haven for wildlife. The activity centre is used for astronomy talks, stargazing, when the sky is clear!!!, astrophotography, photography and a couple of birthday parties for children..
